An Obscure Kind of Trouble
"An Obscure Kind of Trouble" is about the unnecessary feeling of guilt that naturally curious adolescents are made to feel when they explore their world and adults disapprove. The works feature short fictional stories presented as non-fiction, with the intent of unnerving or unsettling readers. The imagery that acts as a counter-point to the writing is real in one sense, because of the emotions they arouse, but they are drained of substantive narrative content an artistic decision to leaves the paintings as suggestive silhouettes. In both text and image, I want the reader/viewer to draw conclusions but feel as if they might be in trouble if they discuss what they think.
The work employs a forms of interactivity adapted from ARGs (Alternate Reality Games) and applies them to the context of the Fine Art gallery space. Although I give the readers/viewers the ability to consume my work as they see fit but ultimately employ subtle tricks to push them into seeing the work the way I would prefer them to.
